Hoa Lo Prison Museum in Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi

Hoa Lo Prison is now a museum. Formerly, it was a prison used by the French colonists for political prisoners, and later on, by the Vietnamese for the US prisoners of war. Historically, it is one of the largest and highest security prisons in Indochina.

The prison is divided into many parts:

Cell D

This cell was one of the largest cells in Hoa Lo Prison used by the French colonists to keep male prisoners.

Cell E

This cell witnessed the draconian policies of the French against male political prisoners who attempted little by little to kill their will to fight.

Cachot Area

Cachot is an area used to confine prisoners who broke the regulations of the prison.

Aside from seeing the different parts of the former prison, there is also an exhibition of pictures and objects that shows details of US pilots’ life when they were temporarily imprisoned at Hoa Lo Prison.

The museum is open everyday from 8am to 5pm. It has an admission fee of 30, 000 VND.
